Thanks to the continued support of Cornèr Banca, the European Journalism Observatory (EJO) of the
University of Lugano (Università della Svizzera italiana-USI) was able to present the second in the
series of conferences entitled “Il futuro dell’informazione attraverso lo sguardo dei grandi
protagonisti della stampa internazionale” (“The future of information through the eyes of the major
protagonists of the international press”). The subject of this conference was “The Challenges of
Business Journalism in the Age of Globalisation: is it Possible to Report Fairly?”
The speaker was Andrew Gowers, outgoing director of the Financial Times and one of the best
known and most highly regarded financial journalists in the world. He began his career as a
journalist in 1980 at Reuters, for whom he worked as correspondent in Brussels and Zurich. In 1983
he joined the foreign desk of the Financial Times in London, becoming editor-in-chief in 1990 and
deputy editor four years later. In 1999 he launched the German version of the Financial Times.
The moderator was Marcello Foa, journalist and co-founder of the EJO.
The conference, held in English with simultaneous interpretation in Italian, was held at the
University on 15 May 2006. The sponsorship agreement between the European Journalism Observatory
and our Bank makes it possible to offer the public an interesting series of conferences. This
collaboration, which began in 2005, is part of our policy of supporting local cultural initiatives.
